Chawana loved drawing since childhood and spent most of his free time sketching.
But unlike his contemporaries, he was unable to pursue art academically due to commitments to the family business of painting
movie poster billboards. The pictures were taken from photographs and copied by hand onto a board, often as large as 20 x
20 m. What seemed like a disadvantage however, turned out to be a great benefit, for he learnt to be unconstrained by canvas
size or shape, developing his own technique and being independent of surface or material. We can see this to be more than true in this collection, for each image continues
outside the picture plane - the trees carry on growing upwards, the rock face gradually disappears outside the reach of our
vision. The artist can be seen as a great master of light, often preferring the subtle golden glow of dusk when the setting
sun envelops the leaves and water with warmth. His portrayal of flora and fauna is meticulously executed, every blade of grass
and bend in the leaf carefully detailed and constructed to fit in with the whole. This attention to detail trancends all mediums,
be it oil, pastel or watercolours.
