About Bridge 2007
Japanese contemporary art is
positioned relative to Western culture. In Japan, there is no concrete concept
of contemporary art. It is an ambiguous and chaotic situation – but that
confusion may be the characteristic of contemporary Japanese art.
This exhibition is a result
of the exquisite collaboration of Artist Shojiro Kato of Japan, Curator Yukio Ogushi, and Bangkok gallery owner Atsuko “Akko”
Suzuki.
Kato has achieved numerous distinctive
awards in Japan and has also had 6 solo exhibitions in Bangkok. Furthermore,
the Ministry of Education in Japan awarded him with a scholarship to be an artist in residence in Silpakorn Art University
and he has also been invited to be an instructor of art in China.
Ogushi is a specialist in Vietnamese
art and has curated several exhibitions from Asia in Japan.
Akko has had Akko Gallery in
Bangkok for over 18 years. Akko herself is an amateur artist as well as former
professional photographer in Japan.
Without running to commercialism,
this Bridge 2007 exhibition is showing off the sincere situation of current artists whom are tackling the obstacle of expression
in present-day Japan and whom are artists are open minded to be active internationally.
Therefore these exhibition series is creating a stir not only in Bangkok but also in painting circles in Japan.
